Drawing people from observation is a very challenging thing to do, and as hard as it is in a studio, where people are posing for you, it’s even harder in the wild, where the people move, the light is less than ideal, and you have limited time to work. This fast paced, information dense, three hour online class class will teach you simple, effective strategies that will help you overcome such difficulties, allowing to you draw figures tin pen and ink and water-color that are more, accurate and expressive.
The workshop will be divided into to three parts:
The first part will deal with volumetric construction, how to build your figures out of simple forms, which allows you to deal with the complexities of proportion, gesture, foreshortening and perspective in a simple way, before proceeding to detail and rendering. This method is essential when dealing with figures that are constantly shifting, and in difficult environments, and will show you a number exercises you can do to develop this superpower.
The second part of the workshop will deal with rendering. I will show different approaches to rendering with pen and watercolor, including starting with a pen and then going over it with watercolor, and an approach were I first start with water-color, and complete the drawing with a pen. I will show how to suggest detail and texture, and quick, effective color mixing strategies in situations where time is of the essence.
In the third part of the workshop, I will bring it all together and demonstrate the entire process of sketching a figure in pen and ink from start to finish. And lastly, once the worksop is over I will give an opportunity to submit a drawing or two for individual critique.
